Maternal Disparity

Image
You are probably wondering why I am sharing this if my race is low on the maternal mortality rates.  I saw first hand and experienced racial disparity and it really made me upset for quite some time.  When I was a patient in the Detroit OB office the front desk staff barely interacted with me, made me feel insignificant and just lacked professionalism.  The doctors acted as if we were just another numbered patient and did not spend any time whatsoever educating on pregnancy, expectations, etc.   When I switched to Bloomfield OB the front desk staff was welcoming, the MA took time to talk to me about what had been going on, and the doctor educated and informed me on expectations and the journey.   Is it because people in Detroit often have state insurance and lower socieconomic status which also comes along with lower educational levels? I had the opportunity to seek better care, but I cannot help to stop and think about all the women who do not ...

First OB switch

Being in healthcare it is often difficult to be a patient.  I took my husband to my 2nd OB appointment because we were going to have a dating ultrasound.  We sat in the lobby for well over an hour waiting to be called back.  We got called into a room eventually, I gave my urine sample which confirmed I was still pregnant.  Dr. Kmak came into the room and said, "What brings you in today?" My husband just looked at me.  I told him that he instructed me at my last visit to come back in 4 weeks for ultrasound, genetics, and gender bloodwork.  He said lets go to the back and get it done then.  We followed him and he went to take us into the ultrasound room and there was a young teenager and her mother in there waiting to get blood drawn.  He grabbed them and put them in a supply room and put us in the ultrasound room without even cleaning anything.  I grabbed the sanitizer and sanitized the bed before getting onto it.  He slapped on the jelly...

Hyperemesis Gravidarum

hy·per·em·e·sis /hīpəˈreməsəs/ Learn to pronounce noun MEDICINE severe or prolonged vomiting. "the clinical practicability is limited by a higher degree of side effects, especially hyperemesis" persistent severe vomiting leading to weight loss and dehydration, as a condition occurring during pregnancy. noun :  hyperemesis gravidarum This was a term that I had heard in nursing school but never paid much attention to it.  Shortly after my first appointment I started vomiting, and vomiting, and vomiting some more.  It was not morning sickness, it was all day every day sickness.  At one point I was so tired of vomiting that I went to Urgent Care to get something to stop it.  Urgent Care tested my urine and came in and said we need you to go to the ER because you are showing severe signs of dehydration and you have protein and ketones in your urine which are not good in pregnancy.  I came home, told Matt, called my cousin to see how busy her ER was (she m...

First Doctors Appointment

My OBGYN got me in pretty quickly after finding out I was pregnant.  I found out on December 26th and was able to get an appointment January 3rd.  The medical assistant escorted me to the back and took a urine sample which confirmed pregnancy and I sat in the room for a period of time before Dr. Kmak came in.  He asked some questions about my history, when my last period was and then took me to the back for an ultrasound.  The ultrasound was very quick and it did indicate there was a sac in my uterus and he could hear/see a heartbeat.  He had me come to his office and projected my due date at September 3rd but could not be sure and was not very warm and cozy with information or any education.  We would check in 4 weeks and have a dating ultrasound, genetic testing, and gender testing.  I could continue all activities I was doing and lead a normal life.  It was as if because I was a nurse I should know what to do even though I have never been a lab...

Extra Christmas Present

Image
When I went into the Urgent Care the morning after Christmas and sat in the hallway lined up with people wanting COVID tests after hanging out with their families less than 24 hours before I was irritated.  I could not stop peeing and it hurt every time.  I thought I had a urinary tract infection and was in pain while all these people just wanted a test which would not even be accurate.  I waited for over two hours just to be called back into a room.  The PA walked in and said I do not know if this is happy or bad news but you do not have a UTI you are pregnant. I honestly do not know how I felt in that moment, I smiled, I cried, I was nervous, I was scared, this was not what I wanted right now.  Yes, I always wanted to be a mother and eventually have kids but we had only been married 2 weeks.  What about all of our vacations we were going to take?  What about the freedom we had to just be partners and grow deeper in love?  Would this love g...
